I am the Wind. According to the Bible, I obey God. This is true. People probably don't believe that because, well, I do a whole lot of destruction. Not to brag, but I am responsible for hurricanes and tornadoes, to name just a few of my greatest works. So when people speak of me, God is not mentioned too often. But, honest to God (pardon the pun), we are inextricably linked and I REALLY do obey Him. Just not that often, in order to make life interesting.
In addition to the havoc I wreak on the weather, I have a lot of other talents. For example, I always know what direction I am going. You humans, you get all mixed up with direction, both literally and figuratively. But me? I never do. I always know which way I am blowing...and will blow. This can be a comfort, but also a complete bore. I don't have the excitement of being taken down a path that is unknown. Oh, I know this can be frightening to humans, but when you are always on the side of predictability, well, it can be downright predictable. I guess it all boils down to perspective, one of the few things we all have in common.
While I always know what I am going to do, humans don't. So a lot of parties, picnics and other celebrations have to move indoors because of me. And you runners? No need to say how you feel about me; I already know!
Sometimes I get to be the hero. How, you say? Well, I am associated with both warm and cold fronts. Sometimes I usher in horribly cold temperatures, but other times, I get to be the bearer of warm fortunes. Almost everyone loves that trait of mine. A fence or two may be blown over by my force, but every material thing can be replaced right? We all love to feel that warm wind on our faces, yes?
I guess the biggest difference between me and humans is I am never, ever stable. While I can come and go and while my power is seemingly endless, I am jealous of you all in many ways. You may not think I ever stop to notice, but I do. I see you and your families, sitting down to a picnic dinner outside. I witness many weddings and many funerals. I see how you come together despite the destruction I create: homes and churches get rebuilt, you help each other, despite the pain. You experience joy, grief, anger, sadness, peace. I experience none of this.
So perhaps the next time you start to curse me, step back and think about me in a different way. Take a few seconds to pity me...for even though I take much from you, there are things you have that I don't and, try as I might, things I can never, ever truly take away.
